School bus insurance scheme to continue into 2015

PETALING JAYA: Schoolchildren ferried by legal school buses will continue to be covered up to RM100,000 under the School Bus Insurance Scheme in 2015.

In a statement by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), the scheme was continued after the Government received "favourable" responses from parents, schools and school bus operators.
"The insurance scheme is one of SPAD’s key initiatives to raise the service standards of the school bus industry and at the same time aid school children and their families when faced with untoward incidents," a spokesperson said.

Announced in the 2013 Budget, the scheme offers insurance protection for accidents, permanent disability and death to all school children using school buses registered with SPAD in the Peninsular and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board in Sabah and Sarawak.
Its coverage includes death (RM100,000), permanent disability (up to RM100,000), medical expenses (up to RM3,000), hospital benefits (R
M100 a day for up to 30 days) and death related expenses (RM2,500).

Use of the scheme includes activities such as school excursions, study trips and any extra curricular activities approved by school authorities.

Some 10 insurance claims totalling RM316,612.10 have been made from Jan 2013 until now.
Meanwhile, the School Bus replacement Scheme introduced in 2013 will end on Dec 31 2014.
Some 200 school bus operators have benefitted from the scheme, the spokesperson said.
Parents were reminded to opt for legal school buses for their childrens' safety.

SPAD also called for school bus operators who have not yet registered with them to do so, so they could be eligible for the School Bus Insurance Scheme.
